Assessment of Railroad Bridges using Wireless Smart Sensors 08/19/2020 Despite displacement under train loads being widely considered as an important indicator of a bridge condition, current monitoring solutions cannot provide such measurement in a reliable, cost-effective, and rapidly deployable manner. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with support from the Federal Railroad Administration, have successfully demonstrated a wireless monitoring system with the capability to provide dynamic displacement estimation, while remaining inexpensive and easy to deploy. This webinar aims to inform the industry of the development and practical application of this bridge condition assessment system. The webinar is expected to foster a collaboration with short line railroads to enable more extensive field testing and to refine the system to better meet the industry’s needs. Researchers envision an end-to-end wireless railroad bridge condition assessment system with an intuitive and accessible user interface for bridge engineers, featuring historical data access, anomaly detection, and emergency reporting. This innovation is expected to facilitate timely decision making on maintenance, repair, and replacement actions.  Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in Q&A at the end of the presentation.
